Ikebana Vases |
 |
Ikebana (literally ‘flowers kept alive’) is a centuries old Japanese art form of flower arrangement. The guiding principles of ikebana are to “grasp and express the feeling of the material, to express precisely the third dimension with an emphasis on asymmetrical balance and the beauty of omission”. A key consideration is to use as few stems and leaves as possible in composing elegant contours that highlight the flowers' beauty. There are many formalized styles of Japanese ikebana. For example, the rikka (standing flowers) style was developed as a Buddhist expression of the beauty of nature, with seven branches representing hills, waterfalls, valleys and so on arranged in a formalized way. A more modern, simpler style, called seika or shoka uses only three main branches, known as ten (heaven), chi (earth) and jin (man) and is designed to show the beauty of the plant itself. These formal arranging techniques are taught in very popular ikebana classes. It can take three to five years of study to master the necessary technical and expressive skills. Today, there are about 3,000 ikebana schools in Japan and thousands more around the world. Ikebana is practiced by some 15 million people in Japan, mostly young women.
Our simple round ikebana vases are designed to add understated beauty to your flower arrangements. The center openings are shaped like a flower or sea shell and small flower or sea shell designs are impressed in the top. The well reservoir (for water) holds a top quality, rust-resistant metal pin frog (kenzan) to hold the stems of your flowers. We do not glue the pin frog in place because it’s easier to clean and often easier to create your arrangements outside the vase and then place the arrangement into the vase for final adjustments and display.
Of course, it’s also possible to use your ikebana vase for lovely, long-lasting and care-free dried flower arrangements as well.
IMPORTANT:Every Ikebana we make is unique. No two ever have exactly the same flower or sea shell impressions. The Ikebanas shown are examples only. The specific piece we ship to you will be similar to, but not exactly like the images shown. For example, if you select Ikebana #4, we will ship you an Ikebana that is similar to, but not exactly like example #4. Similarly, if you select the sea shell Ikebana (#5), the Ikebana we ship you will be similar, but not identical to the one shown. If you wish to order a specific flower or sea shell design for your Ikebana, please call and tell us what you have in mind.
Note: Since this is handmade pottery, you should anticipate that exact color and dimensions will vary slightly from piece to piece depending on the precision of our hands and eyes and the conditions of a particular firing. Hence the piece we ship to you will be similar to, but not exactly like the one displayed here.
